- Update on the box turtle bio-active vivarium!

Bio-active Box Turtle Setup in a 55 gallon aquarium!
Переглядів 6 тис.4 роки тому
I decided to spruce up my box turtle's winter enclosure by making the soil bioactive! This was my first time doing this, so it was an adventure and I'm still learning. The soil mix was made with organic garden soil, coconut fiber, and cypress mulch. The night crawlers and red worms were purchased at Wal-mart.

Turdy is getting way too big for her 125 gallon aquarium so I went to Tractor Supply and bought a 300 gallon stock tank! It's really awesome, but it leaked at first. Time to decorate it and make it an amazi...

Update* To see how Turdy is doing now, check out her latest videos on my new channel that I will be posting to from now on - ua-cam.com/video/2PPMTCoTY0c/v-deo.html Turdy is getting big fast! So big, that she's having a hard time getting around her tank with the way the drift wood is set up. In this video I change the layout so she can swim around a bit more freely, but still has a nice natural...

    Snappers look sort of aggressive, but they're really quite docile once you don't seem threatening (always be careful - they're fast!). I'm talking about those that are in the wild. I've now rehabbed one (recently properly released into a location that is the turtle's native habitat). I'm no expert here. I've had to move a bunch of wild snapping turtles just off my property (relocated just far enough so the turtles live longer - safety reasons). Ha ha, Turdy has that look of "Hey, throw me a treat or two". I mean, even the wild snapper I had for a short time was taking food I dropped in the water of my temporary setup. Turdy is like "Hey!!!!!" This was a video from 4 yrs ago, so I'm hoping Turdy is in a way BIGGER habitat. These snappers have so much personality.

    That is a plastic light fixture because it is black or brown. You need a ceramic one. Ceramic are all white. You can burn your house down with that 100 watt heat bulb screwed into a plastic light fixture.

    You might want to raise the basking platform (or lower the water) an inch so the turtle can get fully dry if she wishes.

    What do you keep Turdy's water temperature set on if you use a heater? I have a 3-year-old male snapping turtle and I've been told anywhere from 74-78 Fahrenheit, so I keep Turt's water temp around 74-75. I have Turt in a 180 gallon stock tank, but only keep it about 1/2 full.

    A true bioactive setup always has to have bugs that degrade dead animal and plant matter, so that the plants can reuse it, making it a perfect cycle.

    I thought you needed a huge tank for these. I live in Sweden. I want one. Some say basking is a must, others say no? Thoughts?

    • @motiszm
      @motiszm 11 місяців тому

      Adults need a 300 gallon tank. Basking spot isn't required. If your water stays warm they will pretty much never bask. I put a lot of time and effort into making a basking platform and she never used it lol.

      If you want a good pellet, Mazuri crocodile diet (small pellet version) is a great one. They are a little too big for hatchlings though, so when my turtle was young I fed her Hikari turtle diet. You should feed lots of live food too though.

    I think its awesome! I would rather raise water much higher for the fact that in the wild they are in deep deep water. I would raise the water till it hits that first line and raise the basking area! Great project!

    See your snapper is sleek like a race car. My Rufus looks like a Volkswagon Bug. OK Rufus your going on a diet. Who am I kidding. Rufus just begs and stares at me. I've gotta make a deal with a kid to feed Rufus in 2 months when I go away on vacation. I'm weaning Rufus off the 10-inch tweezer, and just creating a feeding spot in the tank. He does learn fast. Rufus doesn't like kids. He stares at them like a bird dog. I will move him and his head still faces at the kids. I have been noticing that you big snapper owners are always checking the foot padding and belly on your snappers. i have to give Rufus more walk time so he can used to lifting his heavy pork-eating butt off the ground.

  • @frugalspoon1446
    @frugalspoon1446 2 роки тому

    Nice and large. If I had the space I would start like that with a baby snapper. It seem that anyone who owns a snapper has to constantly keep pace with the snappers growth rate. I think snappers grow faster than babies need new shoes.
